TEACHING HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS IN MATHEMATICS CLASSROOMS: GENDER DIFFERENCES

چکیده
This case study aims to explore how male and female Indonesian mathematics teachers enact decision-making processes in teaching High-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Non-random purposive sampling technique was used select the participants. The participants involved this were two who teach HOTS their classrooms. chosen from 87 23 secondary schools East Java, Indonesia, invited our survey confirmed that they taught underwent classroom observation. Data collected interview sessions. data of consisted a video-audio recording meetings field notes In session, we recorded teachers’ responses during semi-structured interviews. We coded explained interpretation for each code. also conducted investigator triangulation by comparing coding made researchers discussing them find best representation meaning data. Our findings indicate both performed four steps decision making, consisting giving problems, asking students solve, checking, obtaining new ideas. difference process is observed problem (non-contextual vs contextual), ask solve check solution (individual group), criteria idea problem-solving (correct solution). can be catalyst enacting HOTS. Also, these reflective practice improve quality.

In October 1998 The Department for Education and Employment commissioned a review and evaluation of research into thinking skills and related areas. The purpose of the review was to analyse what is currently understood by the term “thinking skills” and their role in the learning process; to identify approaches to developing children’s thinking and to evaluate their effectiveness; to consider ho...
متن کاملMathematical Knowledge and Higher Order Thinking Skills for Teaching Algebraic Problem Solving
Solving algebraic problems is a complex process that is influenced by various factors including teachers‟ instruction. The present intense interest in research on teachers‟ knowledge and proficiencies demands that future problem-solving research pay close attention to the mathematical and pedagogical knowledge and proficiencies a teacher should possess. This study explores the Prospective Mathe...
متن کاملNeeded : Better Methods for Testing Higher - Order Thinking Skills
T he task of designing a systematic program for testing and teaching higher order thinking skills is formidable, yet recent advances in the ory and research provide some basis for defining a core of fundamental skills and for designing exercises that require using such skills Since testing programs at the national, state, and local levels are being used to assess students' reasoning skills, the...
متن کاملAssessment Techniques and Students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills
Improving students’ higher-order thinking skills is a collective experience; one teacher of a specific subject cannot alone improve the higher-order thinking skills, and it is a collaborative process between all subjects’ teachers and can be taught for all levels of studying (Lawson, 1993; Shellens, & Valcke, 2005). Moreover, Benjamin (2008) argues that these skills can be developed in a cumula...
